The summary

Sildenafil and Tadalafil to treat premature ejaculation

There are various treatments available for men who suffer from premature ejaculation (PE), something that not only affects sexual health, but can also have an impact on self-esteem. Although Viagra (with the active substance Sildenafil) and Cialis (with the active substance Tadalafil) are known for treating erection problems, they are also prescribed off-label for premature ejaculation (ejaculation too fast). There is not as much research into the effect of this medication on premature ejaculation as the effect on erection problems and the medication has not been approved for this indication either. However, a number of studies have been conducted showing that both drugs can also be effective in premature ejaculation.

So there is in 2007, a study published in the International Journal of Urology that showed a significant increase in the ejaculation time after penetration after testing with 180 men. This study concluded that sildenafil is highly effective and safe to treat premature ejaculation and has a much higher efficacy than paroxetine and squeezing technique.

another clinical research in the 2005 Journal of Sexual Medicine showed that, although the ejaculation time was not increased in this study, sildenafil increased self-esteem, improved perception of control and overall sexual satisfaction, and reduced the recovery time to get a second erection after ejaculation.

How do Sildenafil and Tadalafil work?

Sildenafil and Tadalafil belong to a class of medications called PDE5 inhibitors. They work by inhibiting the breakdown of cGMP in the penis, a molecule that plays a key role in the erection process. Increased levels of cGMP lead to smooth muscle relaxation and increased blood flow in the penis, resulting in improved erection. By improving erection quality, men can have more control over their ejaculation.

Premature ejaculation is a common problem but luckily can be treated well. Although Sildenafil and Tadalafil were developed to treat erectile dysfunction, research shows that these drugs are also effective against premature ejaculation.
