Do I need a prescription for doxycycline?

Yes, you need a prescription.

Doxycycline has been on the market internationally since 1966. It is available by prescription under the Doxy Disp and Vibramycin brands and as the unbranded Doxycycline.
In rosacea, a low-strength doxycycline is used. The low strength is available by prescription under the brand name Efracea.

It is available in delayed-release capsules (mga), dissolving tablets (“dispers”) and injections.

What are the possible side effects of doxycycline?

In addition to the desired effect, doxycycline can cause side effects. The main side effects include the following:

Rare (affects 1 to 10 people in 100)
  • Gastrointestinal complaints, such as nausea. Very rarely abdominal pain, loss of appetite, stomach pain, heartburn, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Inflamed mucous membranes, especially in the mouth, corners of the mouth, pharynx, vagina or anus (poop hole): it is usually a yeast infection (Candida). You can notice this by a white coating on the mucous membranes or itching in the vagina or anus (poop hole). Rarely, you can also get a discoloration of the tongue or teeth.
  • Skin irritation, rash with blisters or pimples on the skin, or red skin.
  • Sinusitis, inflamed nasal cavity.
Very rare (affects less than 1 in 100 people)
  • Headaches and tinnitus.
  • Blush
  • Dark, irregular spots on the skin.
  • Muscle and joint pain, back pain. People with the muscle disease myasthenia gravis may suffer extra from their illness.
  • Trouble swallowing.
  • Esophageal irritation.
  • Less red whether white blood cells, fewer platelets. Tell your doctor about extreme tiredness, pale skin, fever, sore throat and mouth blisters, and nosebleeds and bruises.
  • Fast heart rate, inflammation of the pericardium. Tell a doctor if you get chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and thick ankles.
  • Liver diseases, such as liver inflammation (hepatitis), inflammation of the pancreas. You may notice this by a sensitive, swollen stomach, severe pain at the top of the abdomen, dark pee, a yellow color of the whites of the eyes or skin, or itching all over the body.
  • Your skin may become more sensitive to UV light. (sun, tanning bed, UV lamp)
  • Hypersensitivity for this medication. You notice this by rash, hives, itching, or irregular red spots.

Can I use doxycycline if I am pregnant, planning to become or breast-feeding?

Pregnancy
DO NOT use this medication from week 16 of pregnancy. This medication is then harmful to bone growth and the development of the baby's teeth.

Talk to your doctor at the beginning of pregnancy (up to week 15) and if you want to become pregnant. In many cases, your doctor may prescribe another antibiotic that is safe throughout pregnancy. Is that not possible and should you use doxycycline? During the first 15 weeks of pregnancy, counting from the last menstrual period, you can safely use doxycycline.

Breastfeeding
Short-term use (3 weeks or less)
You can use this medication safely if you take it for a short time. The drug enters breast milk in small amounts, but does not harm the child.

Can I just stop taking doxycycline?

If you stop, there is a chance that not all bacteria have disappeared. The infection then persists or returns. So always complete the course, according to your doctor's instructions.

If you get allergic reactions or serious side effects, you should stop taking the course. In that case, contact your doctor immediately.
